Book Synopsis
Tommy, Dixon, McEwen, PJ, and Alison
were always a close knit group until Tommy’s 12th birthday party.
Tragedy strikes when a magic trick goes horribly wrong and a woman lays dead.
A local magician Albert Trotter is
railroaded during a rigged trial and locked away. Forever protesting his
innocence and after a vicious assault in prison, he is eventually sent to a
mental institution in a catatonic state.
Now Tommy is 36 and heading home for
the first time in over two decades, but he’s not alone. Someone is slaughtering
the residents of Denver Mills with magic trick themed murders and holding those
involved with the Trotter trial in a steely grip of fear.
Tommy will have to find the strength to
bring his old friends together as secrets and lies are exposed throughout the
small town of Denver Mills.
Something evil is coming home, and
they’re bringing a whole new bag of tricks.
My Review
Abra-Cadaver
is the third book by Matt Drabble that I have read. While I thoroughly enjoyed
Gated and Asylum-13 Tales of Terror, I have to say, he really knocked my socks off with this book.
Abra-Cadaver is about a group of 12-year-old friends celebrating their friend
Tommy’s birthday and anxiously awaiting the arrival of the party’s
entertainment – a magician! The curious kids find themselves snooping around
the magician’s van and messing with his equipment. What unravels is a
magic trick gone wrong and a dead magician’s assistant. The kids are
emotionally scarred by the incident and go their separate ways. The magician is sent off to
prison and then to a psychiatric facility.
Matt
Drabble has written a brilliant tale of greed, horror, and revenge. He
catapults readers into the thrilling story with the magician’s escape from the mental ward and
deadly journey to seek revenge on the town that sabotaged his trial and threw
him to the wolves. As the dead bodies pile up, the group of friends are
battling to stay alive.
I
was impressed with the thick plot and never-ending action. Just when you think
you have an idea of “what, who, and why,” Drabble drops another surprise in your
lap. I couldn’t put the book down until the very last page. Abra-Cadaver is well
written, nail-biting, funny, and will not disappoint fans of the horror and
thriller genre. I give this 5 stars all day long!
Author Info (Matt Drabble)
Matt Drabble broke into
Amazon's top 100 Horror Writers last week at #99 albeit only for an afternoon
as the chart is updated hourly and I leapfrogged Clive Barker for a short while
which seemed bizarre.
2013 has been a
breakthrough year for me so far as I have been self-publishing for a little
over a year now and I have started making a living this year with book
sales of well over 11,000 so far. Which seems pretty huge for someone with no
literary educational background and in a worldwide self-publishing market which
is so massive and competitive.
