I’m excited to introduce a hot new release by Lori Verni-Fogarsi! The novel, “Unexpecting,” is about a couple of almost-empty-nesters who, preparing to embark on their new, quieter lifestyle, receive the shock of their lives when a pregnant teenaged girl shows up on their doorstep and announces that she’s the daughter they never knew they had! Professionally edited and published by Brickstone Publishing, the book is available in paperback or Kindle. MY REVIEW

Shelley and David are on the verge of having an empty house.  With kids currently in college and in high school preparing for college the following year, the couple has plans to enjoy life together and mostly childfree.  With their dream vacation in the works, everything is going as planned. Well, until Alexandra shows up at their door. She is seventeen-years-old, very pregnant, and David’s daughter. A daughter that he was completely unaware existed. Alexandra and her baby will forever change their comfortable and routine life.

Alexandra’s mom passed away, and she has no other family to turn to except David. A man she only found out about after her mother’s death. Shelley and David handle this situation with tact and grace. They take in the pregnant teen and attempt to make her as comfortable as possible. Soon, baby Patrick arrives and everyone experiences an upheaval.

Lori Verni-Fogarsi  has written a captivating story about family. I appreciate how complex these characters are and how deep she went with the plot. Unexpecting dives into a world of substance abuse, rehabilitation, and unconditional love. I appreciate Lori’s portrayal of a family who has been thrown a curve ball. I enjoyed the realistic behaviors from all the family members. It was wonderful to see Shelley and David evolve, especially after multiple rough patches they had to endure. This is family drama. Unexpecting made my laugh, cringe, and pulled at my heartstrings.

INTERVIEW WITH THE AUTHOR

Can you tell us about your upcoming release, Unexpecting?

I’m excited about it because it’s a true “family story.” There are funny parts and heart-wrenching parts, but overall, it’s the story of a dynamic family navigating through both common and unusual circumstances!

Warning: A little bit of a spoiler!... Readers have probably already seen the book description, about Shelley and David being a couple who receive the shock of their lives when Alexandra, a pregnant teen shows up and announces that she’s the daughter they never knew that had!

As the story progresses, the couple face tough decisions that they never expected to come along: Are they willing to raise this baby themselves forever? What if Alexandra turns out to be a full-fledged drug addict and never gets her act together? And in the meanwhile, how can they be there for their other kids who still have all the normal circumstances that come up in life, while also trying to save their strained marriage from the stress of all these dilemmas?

When you are working on a large writing project, what does a typical workday look like for you?

Put on your seatbelt, things get a little crazy around here! My day begins at 5:50am, upon which I see to it that all three kids are off to school at their respective times. By 7:25, I’m in front of the computer working on my manuscript, e-mails, social media, and projects for clients. Most days, I stay there until around 3:00pm, at which point (I hate to admit) I first get my makeup on and ready to leave the house!

My evenings normally consist of running back and forth between dancing school, dancing school, dancing school, and more dancing school. And gymnastics. In between, I prepare dinner, and sometimes when I have a really long wait---um, at the… you guessed it, dancing school---I take my laptop and work at the library for a few more hours while I’m waiting.

What is your ideal writing environment?

In my “perfect world,” I would be able to do all of my writing at our second home on Lake Gaston. It’s so quiet and serene, it really tickles my writing muse!

What advice would you give a writer considering the self-publishing route?

Two things. First, just go ahead and write your book. Don’t worry about what you’re doing to do with it later. After all, if you haven’t written it, you don’t need to worry about publishing it!

Secondly, invest in a professional editor. Unless your goal is that only your mother and sister are going to read and love your books, it’s very important to make sure that your self-published book is just as cleanly edited and proofread as any other professional book a reader would pick up. Otherwise, you may sell one book to that person, but they surely are not going to recommend it to others or look for your future work!

You are an author, professional public speaker, and small business consultant. How in the world do you manage to accomplish everything that you do?

I work on whatever is feeling right at the time. At any given time, I might be writing my own manuscript, building two websites for clients, helping another few clients with social media, etc. Instead of pressuring myself, I try to just go ahead and work on what tickles my fancy at the time (keeping deadlines in mind too of course). Believe it or not, this actually helps me get more done, and in a quality way, than if I were to try and “force myself” to work on particular things at particular times.

Thank you so much for having me for this interview and participating in my blog tour! I look forward to getting to know your readers more, too!

Book Review: Scars from a Memoir by Marni Mann

Scars from a Memoir (Young Adult Edition)
by Marni Mann

  • Paperback: 272 pages
  • Publisher: Libertary Company (October 26, 2012)
  • Purchase Link: Amazon

Book Description

"I could make up a story to cover the last eight years, but the scars on my arms told the truth. So did my ankles, the skin between my toes, even the veins that had burst on my breasts. Did my battle wounds really prove I was a survivor? Or was I too damaged to be glued back together?"

This Young Adult edition of Marni Mann's sequel to Memoirs Aren't Fairytales picks up with Nicole having only one skyline to remind her of the freedom she'd lost--a tattoo of inked buildings dotting the skies of Boston, crisscrossed by scars. Heroin had owned her, replaced everyone and everything she'd once loved.

Two men want her; one fills a void, and the other gives her hope of a future. Is she too far gone to find love? And because her past refuses to stay buried, will life allow her to sing a lullaby to addiction, or will her scars be her final good-bye?

WARNING: While intended for young adults, this book does contain drug use, strong language and graphic imagery. Reader discretion is advised.

My Review

After I finished reading Memoirs Aren’t Fairytales, I was eager to jump into the follow-up novel, Scars From A Memoir, where Nicole’s story of addiction and recovery continues. While in a sober living environment, Nicole attempts to restore balance in her life, and quickly meets Asher, a young man who wants to love and protect her. When light begins to fill the darkness, people from her past creep in and disrupt the peace that Nicole has worked very hard to attain.

Determined to make her brother Michael proud, especially after he lost his life trying to save her, Nicole listens as his voice of reason fills her head during the bleak and lonely times. She winds up in a confusing love triangle and makes an effort to stay safe when violence from her past life erupts.

Marni Mann has given us an excellent continuation of Nicole’s life. In her first novel, Mann did a superb job in detailing the life of an addict, but now, in Scars from a Memoir, we see the aftermath from the destruction of that lifestyle. Despite the progress being made, there are always cravings and demons that an addict must battle to pursue a clean and healthy life.

Again, Marni Mann has written an enticing story and the character development is wonderful. I really found myself adoring Nicole throughout her intense journey. She turned out to be a phenomenal young lady. This book is intense, has multiple surprise twists, and an ending that will shock you.

UPDATE #3 - 100 Things in 2013

8.  Go to Powell’s Books.

Last month, I took a trip to Portland with Bradley and Powell's Books was a necessary stop for me. As soon as I walked through the door, I was overwhelmed. I had no idea that Powell's was insanely HUGE. It would take tons of trips for me to see the entire bookstore without zooming through. I did pick up a few books while I was there.

42. Rework Guadalupe tattoo.

While in Portland, I visited with one of my favorite tattooers, Alana, and had my Guadalupe tattoo reworked. It took three hours and was worth every minute. She is so gorgeous and I am no longer embarrassed to show her off.

43.  Go on a coffee date with a friend.

This morning I met with a friend at a steampunk coffee shop in downtown Olympia called Sizizis. It was a magical little place that served delicious coffee.

76.  Spend the day with Bradley in Portland.

As you can tell by the first two things above, I spent the day with Bradley in Portland. We drove around the city looking at cute houses, got coffee, went to bookstores, got tattooed, ate dinner with my friend Alex, and wrapped up our adventure with a trip to Voodoo Doughnut.

94.  Compliment someone every day.

Whether online or in person, I have been doing this!

99.  Eat at Bearded Lady Food Co. in Olympia.

After we attended the Peeps Awards Ceremony, we celebrated our wins at the Bearded Lady Food Co. I stuffed my face with espresso ice cream with cookies and a chocolate topping. Super good stuff!

Spring Break 2013: Swimming & Chicken Sitting!

Last week was Spring Break for my kids. We did some chicken sitting for friends who went out of town. My youngest two enjoyed feeding and loving the chickens each day. My son was in charge of collecting the eggs. It was a fun experience for us.

When we weren't tending to chickens, we were swimming at the pool. As you can see in the photo below, it was a real rough week for us. What did your family do on Spring Break?

The Dragon's Call
by K.W. McCabe

  • Print Length: 238 pages
  • Publisher: FantaFire Press, LLC; 2 edition (September 28, 2012)
  • Purchase Link: Amazon

Book Description

In a war-torn world, a careless act of destruction wakes a creature of myth and legend - a dragon. Mankind unites to battle for survival, but when dragons enter the fray in human form... humans lose.

Three decades later, Cecily lives in an enclave with her father and brother. Ignorant of life before the war, she placidly obeys the restrictions imposed by dragonkind.

Stifled by court life, Derek, heir of the Dragon Queen, commits a petty crime. To avoid punishment and chronic boredom, he escapes to the enclave. His arrival sparks increased tension when he meets Cecily. She realizes the limitations on her freedom, and Derek discovers his life is built on a lie. Their forbidden friendship threatens to splinter the separation between their people, but something more dangerous occurs.

A mysterious killer has kidnapped Cecily's mother - and seems to be stalking Cecily. Derek and Cecily must defy the rules of their society to find and stop the murderer before Cecily is next

My Review

This YA fantasy novel intrigued me because the dragons take human form. I enjoyed the history that K.W. McCabe created about the dragons, humans, and the war they encountered. After the dust settled and the dragons regained power over the humans, there were new rules set up for both sides to follow in order to coexist together. Unfortunately, not everyone follows those rules and humans begin to disappear.

Seventeen-year-old, Cecily, gets a surprise when two young dragons enroll at her school. She finds herself interacting with one specifically, Derek. It’s an enthralling and confusing exchange between the two and unbeknownst to them, there is a dark history of their past that will soon intrude on their lives.

I enjoyed the characters, the story, and the beautiful descriptions that brought this fiction world to life. I am looking forward to McCabe’s next novel, Dragon Kin. My 12-year-old who is an avid reader also devoured this book and is begging to read the next one!

Peeps Diorama Contest 2013

Do you remember the Peeps Contest that I participated in last year? You can read about it here. If you have no idea what I am talking about, let me tell you about all the fun! My local library hosts an annual contest called, Peep Into My Favorite Book! Basically, you make a diorama in a small box depicting a scene from your favorite book using Peeps (the marshmallow candies) as the characters. It is so cool to see how much creativity goes into each one.

This year I entered the adult category with a scene from Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer. I didn't place in the contest, but I did receive an honorable mention.

I also entered the family category with my 8-year-old daughter. We did a scene from The Lorax by Dr. Seuss and ended up winning first place!

My oldest daughter entered the teen category with a scene from Divergent by Veronica Roth and she also won first place!

Here are some of our favorite dioramas from the contest:

Product Review: Alter Eco (chocolate and quinoa, and rice, oh my!)

A team of activists who strive to provide healthy food while working with small-scale farmers runs Alter Eco. The business is focused on fighting social and economic justice by maintaining Fair Trade and Organic practices. Alter Eco carries a variety of quinoa, rice, chocolate, and sugar.

I received a box of food products from Alter Eco to review in exchange for an honest review. The items were definitely some of my favorite products: chocolate & nutritious food that tastes good!

ORGANIC CHOCOLATE

  • Dark Coconut Toffee - crunchy and toasted, wit a chewy bite, and a smooth buttery finish
  • Dark Quinoa - light crispy crunch, an artisan update on a nostalgic childhood treat -
  • Dark Blackout - deep fruity intensity, not recommended for those afraid of the dark -

My favorite bar of chocolate was definitely the Dark Coconut Toffee. Each bite was heavenly. The chocolate was sweet and had just enough coconut to be tasty, but not overpowering. I also enjoyed the other chocolate bars, but they contained higher amounts of cocoa, giving them a bittersweet bite. I did enjoy the crunch of the Dark Quinoa bar.

PEARL QUINOA

Closer to couscous, with an ever-so-slight crunch.

I am new to cooking quinoa, but I was excited to cook something different for my kids. I prepared the quinoa according to the instructions on the package. Within 15 minutes, I had a small pot of fluffy quinoa. I placed it in a mixing bowl with one cup of applesauce, 1/4 cup of peanut butter, and a few shakes of ground cinnamon. It was a yummy breakfast. My kids gave it two thumbs up!

THAI STICKY PURPLE RICE

This rare beautiful grain will make any recipe stick.

I was really interested in preparing the Purple Thai Sticky Rice. I decided to cook the rice and serve it with steamed vegetables. I was fascinated by the color and surprised by how it tasted so much like properly cooked sticky white rice. It was delicious. I also enjoyed that it cooked less than 25 minutes. The bonus was that my kids asked for another helping.

I was extremely pleased with the quality of these food items. I look forward to trying more products from Alter Eco and supporting such a cool and positive company.
