Kids Art Week ~ Day 2: Crayon Resist Night Sky #kidsartweek

Today was day two of the online art classes for kids and grown-ups like me who love to make art. The assignment is called Crayon Resist Night Sky and just like day one, we owned all the supplies that were needed for the art project: salt, crayons, watercolors, paint brushes, white & dark-colored paper, scissors and a glue stick.

While watching the instructional video, we colored the background of our white paper and lightly painted over the crayon drawing creating an awesome textured look. My favorite part was sprinkling some salt onto the wet paint - what a cool effect!

When our drawing was dry, we glued some shadows on top to finish off the art piece!

Kids Art Week: Picasso Dogs #kidsartweek

I found a link to Kids Art Week on my Facebook feed and signed up right away. It's FREE and a creative activity for the family this summer. I am grateful for people like Carla, Diane & Lynn who put the time and effort into things like Kids Art Week. I will happily spread the word and join the fun.

Today was day one: Painting Picasso Dogs

The tutorial video introduced us to Picasso, cubism, how to mix primary colors to make secondary colors, and an easy-to-follow process on how to paint the dogs! 

We already had all the materials needed for this class: black marker, construction paper, white paper, paint, paint brushes, pencils, and a glue stick.

DIY Green Crafts: Fishing Game

I've seen the green company,  Green Kid Crafts, on a few different parenting blogs and kept meaning to try them out. Last month they had an awesome special where the company offered their monthly art kit for FREE, you just had to pay shipping. Of course, I jumped on that deal.

I was super excited when the box arrived, and I found four different green activities for my son to make. Plus, a small bag of Annie's snack crackers, yay!

The first craft we chose was the fishing game. A fish template and colorful felt squares were included in the box. I'd like to mention that everything we needed for this craft was included except scissors.

Next, we attached one end of a stretchy cord to a pencil and the other end to a washer. Finally, velcro circles were stuck onto each side of the washer. Then, it was fishing time! We spread the fish on the ground, and my son "went fishing." The velcro pieces easily stuck onto the felt fish. A cute craft!

Love is a Radical Act

Love is a Radical Act is an art installation created by Sam and Kelly. The ceramic hearts they made symbolize that loving one another for who they are is a radical act, and I couldn’t agree more. Allowing people to be themselves is the true act of love. I knew I wanted to participate in this awesome creative movement as soon as a friend had shared the website link on her Facebook page.

I bought a pack of five hearts and have decided where each one is going. I am mailing two of them to pals on the east coast to hang in their neighborhood. The third will be hung near Olympia Timberland Library, one of my favorite places in Olympia, a place that I have felt much love. The fourth is going home with my friend Kris who is currently visiting from England. The fifth one will be hung on the Evergreen State College campus.

I was excited to hear that Sam and Kelly plan to visit Olympia this weekend and host installation events. To learn more about them, click here.

As I was typing this post up, my daughter walked into the room wearing her LOVE YOUR WORLD shirt. I had to snap a photo of her with a heart. Love IS a radical act. Pass it on.
